Veterans of Foreign Wars
Col. Elmore F. Taggart Post 3446

Post 3446 History Page 4

We support the music and athletic programs of Orrville High School. Annual donations to both boosters have been ongoing. Our post sponsors trophies to the offensive and defensive player of the game for every Red Rider football game.

In 1975, we began offering a college scholarship to a graduating senior of Orrville High School. The first recipient was John Denman, who received a $1,500 scholarship award. Since then the award has increased to $2,000 and is currently under consideration for an increase. The overwhelming majority of scholarship awardees have had no direct connection to the VFW. This scholarship is awarded annually based on financial need and citizenship criteria, as well as being accepted into a college or university of their choice.

Our Post has provided flags and flagpoles for the Orrville YMCA and the Dalton YMCA. Additionally, we provided flags for every classroom in the Wayne County Schools Career Center in Smithville.

Supporting our veterans who reside in Hilltop Villa has been a recent priority. Our Post and Ladies Auxiliary make sure these veterans are not forgotten. Visiting our veterans on a regular basis and hosting them in our Post Home is one of our Post and Ladies Auxiliary‘s most important programs. We serve our veterans meals every calendar quarter, alternating between their home and the Post Home. Their favorite meal is a Prime Rib dinner. Additionally we have donated supplies and equipment for their use including two large screen televisions in 2007. The TVs were presented along with a pizza party while enjoying a Cleveland Browns football game.

When one looks back on the story, the history and accomplishments of The Col. Elmore F. Taggart Post, let us always remember that none of it would have been possible without the unselfish sacrifice and dedication of the men, women and children of the Post.

Looking to the future, we need the continued participation of the young veterans who are currently serving our nation on hostile foreign soil or seas to provide service to our community in years to come. Our founders are all gone, only a few World War II and Korea veterans remain, and our Vietnam veterans are almost all over 60 years old. It is time for the next generation of warriors to step up and take charge over an institution that has served the community well since 1936.
